Obsolescence in LCA–methodological challenges and solution approaches
Purpose Obsolescence, as premature end of use, increases the overall number of products produced and consumed, and thereby can increase the environmental impact. Measures to decrease the effects of obsolescence by altering the product or service design have the potential to increase use time (defined as the realized active service life) of devices, but can themselves have (environmental) drawbacks, for example, because the amount of material required for production increases. As such, paying special attention to methodological choices when assessing such measures and strategies using life cycle assessment (LCA) needs is crucial and mainpart of this study.
The study was published in The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2019

Decreasing obsolescence with modular smartphones? – An interdisciplinary perspective on lifecycles
Smartphones offer a wide spectrum of features and functions, are subject to fast technological progress, and have short production and replacement cycles. Prolonging their use-times through modular design can have a significant effect on their environmental impact. This cannot be achieved solely by producing robust and durable devices, because smartphone use-times are closely linked to their functional performance and symbolic meaning. Modularity strategies change the technological principles of existing devices, but also the human-object relationship between users and their smartphones.

Strategies for more Circularity in the Life Cycle of Mobile Information Technology
A defining feature of smart electronic devices is short innovation cycles – smart phones in 2030 will look very different than those of today. Technology innovations in the microelectronics domain and in related fields along the product life cycle, such as recycling and refurbishment technologies, will have a dramatic impact on product design and the product life cycle.

What’s hot what’s not: the social construction of product obsolescence and its relevance for strategies to increase functionality
Subsequently we present an alternative praxeological approach to obsolescence than the usual rational choice related explanations. The closing section discusses opportunities to increase a product’s “aordance” to be kept alive longer.
What’s hot what’s not: the social construction of product obsolescence and its relevance for strategies to increase functionality
This paper discusses both aspects – material culture and human-object relationship – with relation to the highly-contested term obsolescence. Starting with the observation that obsolescence received most public attention in times of crisis, we report results of an analysis of current media discourses. Subsequently we present an alternative praxeological approach to obsolescence than the usual rational choice related explanations.

Erschienen in: Jahrbuch Nachhaltige Ökonomie 2016/2017. Obsolescence of Electronics – the Example of Smartphones
Planned obsolescence has recently been a common allegation to manufacturers, but proof apart from isolated cases is missing. This paper analyses the situation for smartphones, looks at use- and lifetime of smartphones and the underlying reasons for their obsolescence

Obsolescence of Electronics - the Example of Smartphones
Planned obsolescence has recently been a common allegation to manufacturers, but proof apart from isolated cases is missing. This paper analyses the situation for smartphones, looks at use- and lifetime of smartphones and the underlying reasons for their obsolescence. Surveys show that a majority of consumers believes in “planned obsolescence” as a fact on the market and would like to have more durable products.
